Job Description

Main Function Responsibilities:

A) Research:

• Researches new materials, processes and concepts to facilitate continuous improvement in seat design.

• Researches new materials, processes (materials and manufacturing), seating systems, weight reduction for seats, cost reduction for seats, improvements in manufacturing and assembly efficiency, structures and load paths, and industry trends to facilitate continuous improvement in seat design, certification, and manufacturing.

• Ensures compliance to established schedules for tasked research projects.

• Coordinates with outside suppliers and vendors.

• Coordinates with internal departments, including but not limited to purchasing and operations.

• Assesses the ability of the material and process to be produced according to Safran Seats USA specific application requirements and material specification.

• Coordinates project technical details with Thematic leader and other Safran groups

B) Compliance:

• Reviews regulatory and customer specifications.

• Ensures material and component compliance.

• Ensures components and systems in development will be in compliance with governmental and non-governmental standards and requirements during the entry into service period they are scheduled for. Responsible for alerting R&D Project Engineering Manager if components and systems will NOT meet current or known future (i.e. pending rules) certification and design compliance requirements.

C) Planning:

• Ensures project deliverables are accomplished on time, coordinates with PE and supports project detailed planning. Report and escalate to management as needed.

• Structures, plans and coordinates tasks of design projects within schedule and budget.

• Responsible for ensuring compliance with and report-out of provided schedule and budget for each assigned project.

• Perform risk management to minimize project risks.

• Create and maintain comprehensive project documentation.

• Ensure that all projects are delivered on-time, within scope and within budget.

• Develop a detailed project plan to monitor and track progress

• Manage changes to the project scope, project schedule and project costs using appropriate verification technique

• Manage the relationship with the client and all stakeholders

• Develop spreadsheets, diagrams and process maps to document needs

D) Development and Validation:

• Prepares design requirements and statement of work for new seat design or seat components.

• Prepares and reviews weight and cost analysis.

• Coordinates with industrial designers ensuring best possible styling within production capabilities.

• Performs or coordinates tolerance studies and mechanical analysis.

• Communicates interdepartmental through frequent design reviews.

• Responsible to design for manufacturing and assembly.

Creates and modifies 2D and 3D component using 2d, 3D CAD software, or can perform component FEA simulation and modeling.

Complementary Description

• Prepares layouts including but not limited to structural and articulation systems as well as trim design and cushions.

• Creates or modifies detail design, assemblies and drawings using 2D and 3D CAD software or performs linear system FEA simulation and modeling.

• Coordinates comfort studies and cushion and dress cover design.

• Responsible for arranging and scheduling intra-department design reviews.

• Responsible for the scheduling and execution of project specific milestones (e.g. PDR, CDR, Drawing/Model Release, Creation of Test Articles, etc.) as dictated by management and/or project schedules.

• Communicates interdepartmental through frequent design reviews.

• Capture and manage assembly/part quantities and weights in an EBOM.

• Implement analytical approach and establish correlation with actual test data.

• Document all design validation work and maintain database.

• Provides status and schedule updates to department head and other appropriate entities on a regular basis

• Verify, check and sign off on co-workers engineering drawings or DV reports

• Identify problems and develop solutions

• Act as a shop liaison during initial production of new product designs to prevent and/or solve any engineering issue that may arise

• Can simulate and model mechanical Kinetics/kinematic models or performs non-linear structural analysis (16g dynamic) and sizing

• Ensures quality of model, analysis and on time completion.

Job Requirements

E) Prototyping:

• Supports team with tracking part orders, assembling test articles and mockups, requests for quotes from outside suppliers.

• Coordinates, oversees and supports prototyping of developmental products and show seats.

• Can create TSI reports for testing.

• Documents all costing information.

• Complete post static test analysis and reports

• Creates Purchase Orders.

• applying the appropriate test measurements and metrics in the product and testing team

• making sure testing costs are within the budget, simulate cost saving scenarios

• Complete post-crash test analysis and reports.

• Creates design guidelines and procedures to avoid known problems, assist engineering functions to achieve component & vehicle level performance and meet set overall vehicle target

F) Sales and Marketing Support:

• Prepares technical product specifications and presentations for Sales and Marketing support.

• Delivering presentations and performing product demonstrations

• Respond to customer inquiries as communicated through Sales and Marketing.

• Detailed social acceptability report indicating the confirmed difficulties and the methods for remedying them

Qualification Requirements:

Education:

Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Aeronautical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Materials Science, Plastics Engineering, Structural Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering, Mechanical and Energy Engineering, or a related engineering field.

Alternatively, 12 years of equivalent related experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.

Work Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree holders should have an additional 5 years of relevant experience.

  • Master's degree holders require an additional 3 years of relevant experience.

  • PhD holders need 0 to 1 years of relevant experience.

  • Full-time engineering internships post-engineering degree years are included; part-time internships are not considered.

Desirable Aspects:

• Experienced with FEA with Radioss

• Experienced with Catia V5 and SmarTeam

• Problem solving abilities: should be able to analyze mechanical engineering issues, propose solutions

• Multitasking abilities and strong communication to collaborate effectively within multi functional team and able to manage more than one project at a time

• High analytical skills: the ability to perform engineering calculations, analysis and interpret testing results accurately.

• Continuous learning: the desire to innovate and being proactive in learning new engineering skillsets.

Specificity of the job

International and/or Domestic travel required; Less than 15 working days of total traveling per year; 5 working days of international and 10 working days of domestic travel per year.
