A Senior Material & Process Engineer is responsible for supporting engineering by providing information as requested, of the best materials for use in the construction of aircraft components with respect to strength, weight, certification compliance and regulatory requirements. In addition, they are responsible for establishing processes for production personnel to efficiently and safely use the material selected per engineering drawings. They will oversee the receiving, testing, and inspection of material as established in company specifications, qualifying material to specifications and establishing qualification criteria and publishing and/or updating material and process specification for materials and processes used throughout the company.


  • Supports production by providing training for new hires and existing employees on new materials and processes as established on engineering drawings and company specifications.

  • Works with manufacturing personnel to reduce labor while increasing productivity via improved processes and material and provides suggestions to Design Engineering for improved manufacturing based on availability of new material for existing and new processes.

  • Ensures manufacturing personnel is producing product to established process documents and using material per specification.

  • Authors and updates materials and process specifications as needed to support engineering and manufacturing practices, including establishing certification and recertification criteria.

  • Evaluates new material for use in aircraft interior construction.

  • Oversees the incoming receiving of products in need of testing and recertification of materials with limited shelf life.

  • Supports Stress Department by providing materials mechanical properties and strengths.

  • Leads and supervises Material Test Technician(s).

  • Troubleshoots and provides processing solutions for manufacturing issues related to materials.

  • Actively works with Design Engineering on material selection, drawing notes and descriptions.

  • Secures samples for testing based on production

  • Qualifies materials to existing specifications and authors and issues Qualification Reports for those materials.

  • Responsible for an area of specifications (e.g. Metallurgy, Composites, Finishes).

  • Authors and updates materials and process specifications as needed to support engineering and manufacturing practices, including establishing certification and recertification criteria.

  • Authors plans for various Certification requirements, such as Environmental Compliance (-8) and Materials and Process Summary (-82).

  • Troubleshoots and provides processing solutions for manufacturing issues related to materials.

  • Conducts Reliability Engineering and Advanced Aging Studies on components and materials and authors reports for them.

  • Coordinates testing (-8) with internal and external lab resources as needed to ensure acceptance by internal and external customers.

  • Reviews and identifies materials that do not meet Zodiac, Customer, Regulatory or International accords (such as AQMD, US-SO CA, Santa Barbara or European Directives and REACH).

  • Initiates and develops planning to remove suspect materials.

  • Mentors other Engineering disciplines and works actively with Education resources (University, Industrial and Government) as needed to advance Materials Science.


  • Promote and support 5S+1, Kaizen, and other Zodiac sponsored Lean activities.

  • Participate and contribute to 5S+1, Lean and QRQC activities.


Education: BS degree in Chemical Engineering or Material Science required.

Experience: Minimum 8 years engineering experience. Detail oriented and accurate; Ability to read and understand engineering drawing systems and blue prints is required; Possess and applies comprehensive knowledge in field.

Computer Skill: MS Office Suiteâ, MS Windowsâ. AutoCADâ, CATIA V5, SmarTeam is a plus.


  • Excellent blueprint reading skills

  • Knowledge of composite manufacturing processes and tooling

  • Tool design experience

  • Computer literate including Excel, Word, and PC based CAD programs

  • Ability to work within and lead in a team oriented environment

  • Ability to obtain and keep MRB authority

  • Lifting requirement: 30 lbs.
